How To Eat Your Vegetables

My favorite kitchen appliance is not my kitchenaid. Is that sacrilegious?

I. Love. My. Magic. Bullet.

It makes smoothies, curry pastes, blends spices, makes pesto, creams vegan ricotta, chops nuts…

I don’t care if this sounds like an advertisement. It’s true.

My new favorite thing it does is make me a spinach orange julius. WAIT WAIT WAIT! Don’t leave yet! Just hear me out!

This smoothie taste so good. You won’t even know it has spinach in it, other than the fact that its color is off-putting.

During the spinach scare of 2006, I couldn’t find spinach anywhere, even though the affected spinach was only from a specific source. Ecoli bacteria can spread very easily, but it’s not going to affect different sources of spinach. It is true that cooking spinach is the best way to be sure that Ecoli will not harm you. However…

Raw spinach has antioxidants, vitamin C and A and a cup only has 7 calories. If you have a local source of spinach, even if there is a nationwide scare, you should be fine. My brother-in-law’s family is in the fruit/vegetable brokering business and lamented the fact that a scare such as this one can wipe out farmers in that fruit or vegetable. Even if their source is unaffected, people tend to go overboard by avoiding all of that fruit or vegetable. Last year, a link they found between the people who got salmonella poisoning was tomatoes. However, the people bought tomatoes from completely different sources, indicating that the problem was probably not the tomatoes. Yet tomato sales were drastically affected.

So be informed. Talk to your grocer, find out where your produce is coming from. But still eat your vegetables. And trust me on the smoothie. You can NOT even taste the spinach. And your kids will love it too.

Spinach Orange Julius (serves 1)

  • 1/2 frozen banana
  • 2  T frozen orange juice concentrate
  • 3/4 C milk or soy milk
  • a few drops of vanilla extract (if desired)
  • 1 LARGE handful of spinach, washed and stems trimmed

I prefer young spinach for this. Stick all the ingredients in a blender or magic bullet, and blend for about 1 minute, or until spinach is thoroughly mixed in. Drink immediately.
